Wolfgang Gessner, the Head of Department Innovation Europe from VDI/VDE-IT explained the rationale behind AALIANCE while Michael Huch also from VDI/VDE-IT did a great job in managing all of the speakers, including me! My slides are here:

  • Key requirements to validate technology and service innovations;
  • Creating products and services for the market; and
  • What kind of business models and concepts are now required

Businesses could be missing out on a large and growing market opportunity because they don’t understand how the over-60s use the internet. Foviance recently completed research with Sheena Dosaj of City University London , and found that although there are differences in how older and younger people use the internet, nearly all older people studied considered themselves to be moderate or regular users of the internet (95% of over-60s). New Toolkit on “Strengthening the Involvement of People with Dementia”

An Involvement Toolkit along with Supplementary Resource which highlights areas of good practice in involving people with dementia in service planning, delivery and evaluation has been posted on the CSIP Older Peoples Mental Health site. This follows the 2007 publication of the National Audit Office Improving services and support for people with dementia report.


Northern Ireland Kick-Off for Connected Health - Target set for 5,000 remote monitored

In Belfast today, the public and private sector with an interest in an emerging new paradigm combining health and enterprise gathered in the Waterfront Studio to hear the two government departments responsible set out the agenda for Connected Health in Northern Ireland, 2008-2011. Time will tell if the initiative is successful, but it is clear that there is commitment to establish a European Centre for Connected Healthcare, partnering with Continua Healthcare Alliance who hold their Winter Summit in Ireland over the next few days.

At the Belfast event, Health Minister Michael McGimpsey announced additional funding to ramp up telecare services: “Within three years there will be around 5,000 patients in Northern Ireland with chronic disease who will have access to a remote monitoring service for their conditions. This will be one of the largest procurements of this nature in Europe.”
